The 2015 Copa America's third-place finishers will try to repeat their wonderful performance this summer. To do that, they'll have to improve their recent form.

La Blanquirroja returned under the South American spotlight last year, when they ended the 2015 Copa América in third place. Ricardo Gareca, who was coaching his first matches with the Peruvian side, provided stability to a talented but messy team to reach the tournament’s podium. This year their first challenge will be making it to the knockout stage in a group that includes Brazil and Ecuador, two teams that could prove to be quite difficult to beat.

Perú’s Copa América record

Los Incas will play their 30th Copa América tournament. The Peruvian crew has won the competition two times: 1939 and 1975. Adding to their two trophies, Perú has won the competition’s bronze medal eight times (1927, 1935, 1949, 1955,1979, 1983, 2011& 2015). The country has also made it to the knockout stage in each of the last seven Copa América tournaments.

Perú’s current form

Following their superb Copa América performance, fans and experts believed La Rojiblanca would be one of the teams to beat in the World Cup Qualifiers, but Gareca and his men haven’t been able to do so. After winning the bronze medal in Chile last year, Perú has played eight games including friendlies, winning only one match and losing five.

Ricardo Gareca’s profile

The former Argentine striker is well-known for his gutsy approach on football, prioritizing possession and quick counter-attacks. This is the first time “El Tigre” has been in charge of a National Team, following his ups and downs with La Albiceleste as a player.

The former Argentina striker was never included in a Copa América roster. He scored a crucial for La Albiceleste during the 1986 World Cup Qualifiers, but he wasn't included in the team that won the Cup in Mexico.

Perú’s Copa América Centenario roster

Unlike the rest of the teams playing this tournament, Perú’s coach chose to call up only 23 players, leaving no room for error by not adding reserve players. Big names such as Claudio Pizarro, Jefferson Farfán and co-captain Carlos Lobatón have not been included in La Blanquirroja’s roster this summer. The time has come for young players to shine.

Here is Perú’s full roster for the continental tournament.

Defenders: Miguel Araujo (Alianza Lima), Aldo Corzo (Deportivo Municipal), Christian Ramos (Juan Aurich), Luis Abram (Sporting Cristal), Jair Céspedes (Sporting Cristal), Alberto Rodríguez (Sporting Cristal), Miguel Trauco (Universitario), Renato Tapia (Feyenoord).
