Rumors have heavily linked Portuguese manager Jose Mourinho with the managerial position at Manchester United, with current boss Louis Van Gaal tipped to be axed once this season ends.
The Dutch tactician guided the 20-time Premier League champions to two disappointing European exits – one in the Champions League and the other in the Europa League – and never really challenged for the English top-flight crown.
However, a lot has changed at Old Trafford, as the Wayne Rooney and Co. have booked their spot in the FA Cup final and are breathing down Man City’s neck for a spot in next season’s Champions League tournament.
According to British publication the Daily Mail, Van Gaal is confident that he’ll be able to keep his job at the Theatre of Dreams should he deliver the FA Cup – Man United face Crystal Palace in the final – and beat the Citizens to a top-four finish.
Although only a few could have predicted Man United being in this situation during mid-season, Van Gaal’s crew stand a great chance of snatching the last Champions League spot from Pellegrini’s crew.
The FA Cup finalist trail Aguero and Co., but the gap is merely two points. Furthermore, the Red Devils have two fixtures to play before the season ends, whilst only one game remains for Man City.
