As the title races in Europe's "Big 5" leagues comes to a conclusion, the battle for the Primeira Liga crown in Portugal is also nearing its end. This season's fight has been a lot closer than most Portuguese football fans have seen in quite some time and with a two point gap between reigning champions Benfica and nearest challengers Sporting CP, this truly looks like it's going to go down to the wire.
Rui Vitoria's men come into matchday 32 currently on top of the table with 79 points. Given that the Eagles play a day ahead of Sporting CP, they can extend their lead temporarily to five with a victory over Vitória Guimarães on Friday evening. Should, of course, Porto do them a huge favor and beat the Lions, then Benfica just may have done enough to give themselves enough of a buffer to make sure they retain the Primeira Liga title.
Vitória Guimarães last defeated Benfica in Primeira Liga action on February 20, 2012. However, despite sitting in 11th place this season, and with just two points from their past five matches, Friday's visitors have managed to frustrate the Eagles in their past two meetings. Although they did lose the reverse fixture earlier this season, Benfica had to work pretty hard just to get a 1-0 win, and last term, they managed to hold Portugal's most decorated club to a scoreless draw.
The visitors are also guaranteed to remain in the top flight for next season, but obviously will certainly want to pick up their first win over Benfica in over four years later today. A draw, naturally will suffice, but will not suit Vitoria's side, who could see Sporting CP overtake them if they do not earn maximum points in this match.
Benfica have been on an excellent run of form and have not lost a league match since suffering a 2-1 reversal to Porto on February 12, 2016. Since then, the Eagles have won nine straight games and will be seeking to make it a tenth on the trot as they hope to take one step closer towards making it a record-setting 35th Primeira Liga trophy this May.
