When their Champions League quarter-finals opponent was announced, most did not give Benfica much of a chance against Bayern Munich. History was not on their side: three prior meetings had resulted in three failures. However, the Eagles managed to put up a good fight, and despite ultimately losing the tie, it was a fair 3-2 aggregate defeat and not an embarrassing loss some had expected.
In fact, had they been more clinical in the home leg or taken their chances in the away leg, Rui Vitoria's side may have actually been able to pull off an upset and dump the Bavarian powerhouse out of the competition. After all, Bayern were almost dispatched by Serie A giants Juventus until they staged a late comeback and Benfica, as champions of Portugal, are also a solid side in their own right. However, they will have to wait till next season to try their hand at European competition and it is now back to domestic affairs for Vitoria's men.
Benfica are currently locked in a two-way race with Sporting CP - who are now guided by former coach Jorge Jesus - for this season's Primeira Liga title, and it looks like it will be one that will continue until the end of the 2015/2016 campaign. For Portuguese football fans, it must be one of the more interesting title races in recent seasons, and for Sporting CP supporters, they are probably feeling quite hopeful at seeing their team on the winners' podium for the first time in over a decade.
With Sporting CP now temporarily assuming top spot after winning their match, the onus will be on Benfica to rebound from their European disappointment and get the job done against visiting side Vitoria Setubal on Monday. The Eagles' upcoming opponents have been simply awful all season, with just six wins so far this term and one point out of their last five fixtures.
Benfica will be a side still smarting from last week's Champions League match. After all, they did not lose in Lisbon - they drew Bayern Munich 2-2, but it was not enough to make it to the semi-finals. Woe, then, on Vitoria Setubal as they arrive at the Eagles' home ground; they will be taking on a team that will be determined to channel their frustration and efforts into making sure that they resume their spot on top of the Primeira Liga table at the end of round 30.
