Serbian vandals and hooligans prevented the game between Italy and Serbia to go ahead. In what has been described as "the darkest day in Serbian football," players and other fans watched on as a group of sociopaths potentially decided the destiny of Serbia in Group C.

In the end, there was no game between Italy and Serbia. A game on which so much rested for the Serbs will now surely be awarded 3-0 to Italy, after visiting hooligans vandalized the Marassi stadium.

In lurid scenes, reminiscent of the Catania riots of 2007, Serbian vandals threw flares, cut the dividing nets between the spectators and the field with knives and shattered the Plexiglas with metal rods.

One man, donning a ski mask, seemed to be the ringleader, as a fairly well organized plan was coming to fruition. Reports suggested that the travelling contingent had ambushed the Serbian team bus.

After careful consideration, and even attempts to continue, the referee decided that play could not go on after a flare narrowly missed goalkeeper Emiliano Viviano.

The three points that should go to Italy will mean that coach Cesare Prandelli can breathe easy at the summit of Group C. Elsewhere, Northern Ireland, one of Italy's main rivals in the group, drew with the Faroe Islands, and Slovenia defeated Estonia.
