The Sunday Express reports that Man United could use Jose Mourinho as bait to lure their former star Cristiano Ronaldo to Old Trafford.

The English publication adds that the Portuguese tactician is set to take over the Premier League side in the summer to replace Louis Van Gaal. If the deal goes through, the former Chelsea boss could convince the superstar to leave Los Blancos for the Red Devils.

Ronaldo, 31, has managed to bounce back from recent criticism after a poor start to the season. He even scored four goals past Celta de Vigo on Saturday in a bid to silence his critics.

Reports in Spain also suggest that Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane is planning a total overhaul of his squad in preparation for the new season. With La Liga title seemingly out of reach this season, Zizou is hoping that his current crop of players could win the Champions League before embarking on a total cleanup exercise at the end of the season.

Quite unexpectedly, Ronaldo has been identified as one of the players who could be offloaded at the end of the season as Zidane looks into building his new squad around Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale at the front. If the reports are true, then the Portuguese star could be tempted to make a sensational return to Old Trafford, the venue that helped him rise to stardom.

During his tenure with the English giants, Ronaldo scored 118 goals in 292 appearances before leaving for the Santiago Bernabeu for £80 million in 2009.
