With Juventus and Napoli having opened up a slight lead over the chasing pack, the likes of Roma, Fiorentina, Inter, and AC Milan are now all vying for that coveted third place spot that will guarantee them a crack at Champions League football. Fiorentina
At one point, Fiorentina were among the sides mentioned as a Scudetto contender, but the Viola have fallen off the pace and now will be battling to make sure they do not miss out on Champions League football for next season. Roma's recent resurgence will have concerned the team's fans and they will be hoping to see Paulo Sousa's squad put on a better performance on Sunday evening.
The last meeting between Inter and Fiorentina concluded as a 4-1 rout in favor of the Viola courtesy of a hat-trick from new signing Nikola Kalinic. Where have things gone awry for Inter Milan? That is a question that fans surely must be pondering due to the team's disappointing performances in 2016. First there was an aggravating draw with Serie A debutants Carpi, then a 3-0 drubbing by Milan in the Derby della Madonnina. The Nerazzurri rebounded somewhat by defeating Chievo, but it was far from an inspired performance, and shockingly, had to come from behind to secure a 3-3 draw against Hellas Verona - the team with the worst record in the league so far this season.
At one point, Inter were on top of the table and were talked about as a Scudetto contender; now they are struggling to even secure a Champions League spot. They will be eager to get revenge on the Viola for the 4-1 humiliation they suffered at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza earlier this season and correct a downward slide in form that will surely have their supporters frustrated and confused.
The result against Hellas Verona will be quite troubling as it was the second time in just two games that they had shipped three goals. In 2015, their defense was regarded as the best in Italy; that spot has now been overtaken by Juventus. Mancini will only be missing Felipe Melo due to yet another ban and will hope that his squad will snap out of their mid-season malaise to get back to winning ways.
