A derby win can do quite a bit for a team's morale, and AC Milan will be hoping to build on a resounding 3-0 win over Inter last weekend as they face a Palermo side that will be keen on disrupting their plans on Wednesday evening. The Rossoneri are within touching distance of a Europa League berth and could even close the gap on third-placed Fiorentina should they pick up a win in Sicily tomorrow.
Palermo
Palermo have struggled to achieve consistency for large parts of this season, but given that the Rosanero have already gone through four coaches, this is not entirely surprising. However, they rallied impressively following a 4-0 drubbing by Genoa to thrash Udinese 4-1, although they will be ruing their chances to pick up another three points after being held to a 1-1 draw with debutants Carpi.
Seven points earned in their last quartet of matches have seen Giovanni Tedesco's side rise into 14th place, six away from the drop zone and they will be hoping that experienced striker Alberto Gilardino - who is the team's top marksman - will be able to successfully lead the line against his former side. The hosts will have everyone available for this match and gave Milan quite a battle in their last meeting, in which they were narrowly edged out 3-2.
The last win for Palermo against Milan was on November 2, 2014, when they defeated the Diavolo at the San Siro, but one will have to go back to March 19, 2011 to find their last home league win (not including an ill-tempered 2-1 clash during the Coppa Italia on May 10th of the same year).
AC Milan
The Rossoneri will be brimming with confidence after beating the Nerazzurri last weekend and will hope to continue in this rich vein of form Wednesday evening, as Palermo have not been able to keep a clean sheet against them since that win on March 19th, nearly five years ago. All in all, Milan have only lost one out of their past seven meetings against the Rosanero, and having already beaten them earlier this season, will certainly hope to complete a double over the Sicilian side and re-launch their European football ambitions.
With just one defeat in their last nine games, Sinisa Mihajlovic's team appeared to have turned a corner, but will still have their work cut out for them if they want to secure continental football after a two-season hiatus. The win over Inter will have eased some of the pressure on the Serbian tactician's shoulders, but a slip-up in Sicily will certainly put him under the microscope of demanding president Silvio Berlusconi. Fortunately for the visitors, only Diego Lopez and Rodrigo Ely will be absent, meaning that all key players will be available for selection for this potentially tricky tie.
Given that both Inter and Fiorentina have stumbled, and Roma still has to fully find their way, Wednesday's fixture will represent a perfect opportunity for the Rossoneri to improve their standings in the league table. However, Palermo will not make it easy, as they will hope to put more distance between themselves and the bottom three as they aspire to remain in the top flight for yet another season.
