Liverpool come into this match at the back of a 1-0 defeat at the hands of rivals Manchester United and will be hoping to bounce back with a win on Wednesday. The reverse fixture saw Jurgen Klopp field arather inexperienced side as the German made 11 changes for the match at St James Park. The decisions back fired with the match ending in a 2-2 draw.
The Reds are currently ninth in the Premier League, eight points shy of a top four place. With league title hopes very bleak at the moment, Liverpool will be looking for luck in the cup competitions.
England international Daniel Sturridge is back in training after going through numerous setbacks. Klopp has now insisted that he will not rush back his star striker and will give him time to recover.
The former Chelsea and Man City striker has made just six appearances but has amassed four goals in the process and Klopp is not willing to take a gamble on his star man.
“There is absolutely no chance for Daniel,” Klopp said.
“He had a break in his training sessions because of some issues; he is now back on the pitch and again training.
“He has had no team training until now since Newcastle [on December 6], so that’s not a situation where we can think about him. We have always to find solutions.”
Apart from Sturridge, Belgian international Divock Origi will also continue to be on the sidelines with a knee injury. Steven Caulker has been deployed as an emergency striker in his last two substitute appearances but is likely to start at the heart of the defence in the coming match with Dejan Lovren and Martin Skrtel both ruled out of the match with hamstring problems.
Liverpool have conceded from a corner in two of their last three matches against Exeter and Arsenal, Klopp will be looking to address that issue in the subsequent encounter.
