Barcelona could reclaim the top spot on the La Liga table if they beat Granada at the Camp Nou today.

The Spanish giants continue with their title defence campaign when they host Granada at the Nou Camp, just a few days after dismissing their bitter rivals Espanyol 4-1 in a heated encounter. League leaders Atletico Madrid are not in action until January 10, and this gives the Blaugrana more hopes of ascending to the top of the La Liga table.

On the other hand, Granada come into this fixture as the underdogs, having lost 4-0 to Garry Neville’s Valencia in their midweek Copa del Rey fixture. The Andalusian club has registered a series of bad results this season and are currently sitting just two points above the relegation zone. In their last 10 away fixtures in all competitions, they have only won one.

Barca still have the upper hand in this fixture, having won all their 21 league matches at home against Granada. Last season when the two sides locked horns, Neymar scored a hat trick, Messi scored a brace and Rakitic added a goal to give the La Liga defending champions a 6-0 victory.

This match also holds special memories for Ballon d’Or nominee Lionel Messi. When the two sides met in 2012, he scored a hat trick to move past Cesar as Barcelona’s all-time top scorer in the league. Barca won the match 5-3. Therefore, fans should expect a high-scoring match today considering Barca’s deadly attacking form. Another hat trick could be in the offing today, if the previous results in this fixture are to be considered.

Team news

FC Barcelona

Aleix Vidal and Arda Turan are available for selection after serving their ineligibility period. Dani Alves could start at the right-back, while Sergio Roberto is suffering from a knock. Suarez could start alongside Messi and Neymar, since his recent two-match suspension only applies for the Copa del Rey.

Granada

Cristiano Biraghi is eligible to play after returning from a ban. He could start at the left wing-back, while Diego Mainz and Doria could also start at the central defense. The attacking duo of Adalberto Penaranda and Isaac Success will most-likely lead the hunt for goals for the visitors.
