Sebastian Giovinco was the leading scorer with 22 goals in 33 games. L.A. Galaxy Robbie Keane won it in 2014.

Sebatsian Giovinco could not have dreamed of a better debut season than the one he had with Toronto FC when he signed with the club this past January. The former Juventus striker took the league by storm and was announced today as winner of the Landon Donovan MLS Most Valuable Player award.

28-year-old Giovinco left Juve halfway through their season and while he missed going to the Champions League final with his club, he wrote his own story with the Canadian team. He would end his season in the first round of the playoffs but he had already done a great job with his team before that.

The MLS proudly presents its new MVP

His 22 goals and 16 assists made him the leader in both departments and it was the first time that a sinlgle player won both categories. Tose efforts helped Toronto FC reach their first playoffs in franchise history. That may not have been possible without Giovinco, who scored the goal that got them into the finals less than 24 hours after playing with Italy on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean.

Giovinco fell short against Drogba and Impact Montreal in the Playoffs. Either way, he had proven his value not only to his team, but also to the league. He is the first player of Toronto FC to be named the league MVP and the first Italian to do so as well. Last year, the award belonged to the Irish Robbie Keane, who plays for L.A. Galaxy.

Sebastian Giovinco received 87.27% of the club votes, 94.37% of media votes and 77.33% of the players votes. He left Kei Kamara and Benny Feihaber way back as the runner-ups for this prestigious award. This adds to his MLS Newcomer of the Year award and member of the MLS Best XI squad announced recently.

That makes it a total of five awards in his first season with Toronto FC and his first steps in the Major League Soccer. The only thing that Giovinco missed was winning the MLS Cup which will be disputed between the Portland Timbers and the Columbus Crew this Sunday at MAPFRE Stadium.
