A French member of parliament wants Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema banned for spitting after the French national anthem was played at the Santiago Bernabeu during last weekend’s El Clasico.

According to the MP Nadine Morano, the embattled forward consciously spit on the ground seconds after the Marseillaise was played at the beginning of the much-anticipated derby. The French national anthem was played to pay tribute to the victims of the Paris terrorist attack which occurred a week before the Classic.

The MP, whose party is led by former president Nicolas Sarkozy, has now insisted that the 27-year-old should be banned from the national team.

In the recent weeks, Benzema has been caught up in various legal problems, most notably the traffic incident and the Mathieu Valbuena saga. A new scandal is on the offing as the Frenchman has been accused of disrespecting the French national anthem during El Clasico.

Watch Benzema spit on the ground after the national anthem and be the judge.
