Real Madrid missed its chance to climb to the top of the table after Barcelona had lost. Atletico has not lost to Madrid in any of the last five La Liga derbies.

Another Madrid derby is in the books and this time not many people are happy with the outcome. Both managers claimed that a draw was not what they wanted to get from this game after Barcelona had lost against Sevilla. In the end, a 1-1 scoreline vanished the hopes of Rafa Benitez and Diego Simeone.

Real Madrid has been well known for having no mercy on most of their opponents. Usually, when they go up in the scoreboard, they will not stop there and keep looking for more ways to score. So far this season, they have 15 goals in seven games. After they scored one against Atletico Madrid, Benitez team did not do much.

It had only taken nine minutes for Benitez' team to take the lead with a header from Benzema. From his perspective, Madrid had control of most of the game, but just lacked that final touch that could have given them a better lead.

"If you only look at the last 15 minutes, Atlético were pushing. Looking at the whole game, we had control," Benitez said. If we had made our final pass count in any of the counterattacks, the final result would have been 2-0".

Atletico also created some interesting chances. It all started with a missed penalty in the first half that Keylor Navas stopped and continued with some other missed opportunities in the second half. It was within less than minutes from the end of the game that Luciano Vietto  found the back of the net.

Diego Simeone's side confirmed that they are the ones that dominate when it comes to games in La Liga. Madrid has not won any of the past five derbies in the domestic league. Simeone felt that Atletico was still the better side in the game at the Vicente Calderón.

"They did not create chances but it is possible that, with four midfielders, they controlled the match more," Simeone said. "They didn't intercept and counterattack. We were playing to find the spaces."

With the 1-1 draw, Real Madrid moved up to second place in La Liga behind Villarreal. Atletico is in fifth place with 13 points, only two behind Los Merengues and the Yellow Submarine.
