The English striker just broke Sir Bobby Charlton's record for the most goals with the National Team (50). Lionel Messi praised him by saying there's no one like him.

Wayne Rooney is living a week that has been 12 years in the making. The 29-year old striker just passed Sir Bobby Charlton's scoring record with the National Team with 50 after he scored in the game against Switzerland where they won 2-0.

Rooney had his debut with the Three Lions on February 12, 2003. He got within striking distance of Sir Bobby's record by scoring once against San Marino earlier in the week. A 6-0 win clinched their ticket to the Euro Cup. 13 minutes into the game Rooney was the one that gave England the lead from a penalty kick.

Just a few days later Rooney took the ball and set it in the penalty spot. This time the score was already 1-0 and the game was about to end. 45 years after Charlton had set the record at 49, Rooney had the chance to be the new king in front of the home crowd at Wembley and he took it. He scored and the rest is history.

Rooney barely gets emotional after scoring a goal, but this time he could not hide his emotions. The Manchester United forward had reached the top of the goal-scoring list 12 years after his debut with the Three Lions. England could also celebrate as a team as they became the first team to qualify for the Euro Cup.

At that time, the whole stadium surrendered to Wayne Rooney's brilliance. Almost his whole team hugged him right after taking the penalty. Almost every fan at Wembley stood up and clapped as history was being made, even the Swiss fans.

In the following days, many of the current and past football legends have congratulated Rooney on his achievement. One of the first ones to do so was Sir Bobby Charlton. Also, Lionel Messi, named the Best Player by UEFA in 2014-2015 season, praised the 1.76 meter tall striker.

“Wayne Rooney is for me a once in a generation player. One of those special players, who is not comparable to any other," Messi said about Rooney.

Rooney's record vs Liverpool: what you should know

Wayne Rooney has been on fire with the National Team lately, but has struggled with Manchester United in the beginning of the season. The confidence that he gained from the two most recent games with England could be crucial as the Red Devils face Liverpool in the Premier League.

It is a serious drought for England's top goal-scorer. 10 EPL games have gone by since the last time Rooney scored. The team has only scored four goals in the last three games. On the bright side, many of the players believe they are going to get much better when they face a team like Liverpool.

"Hopefully getting two goals in the last two games will mean I continue scoring," Rooney said as the game against the Reds approaches.

Rooney's record against Liverpool does not give him much hope. In the last 22 games against Liverpool the English striker has only scored five goals. Against their upcoming opponent, Rooney has his lowest goal-scoring average (0.23/game).

When both teams met at Old Trafford last season, Rooney scored one goal and missed a penalty in the next game between Manchester and Liverpool at Anfield. England's Bad Boy wants to leave all those negative stats behind this weekend and continue with his hot streak.
