Portugal vs France preview - September 4, 2015 fixture

As hosts of the EURO 2016 tournament, France have already sealed their spot among the teams battling for the trophy. Hence, the 1998 World Cup winners have been able to use the hectic qualifying rounds to take on some of their potential opponents next summer in a series of non-competitive matches, with Friday evening's meeting with Portugal being the fifth international friendly since the start of 2015.

Les Bleus, who won the EURO trophy twice in 1984 and 2000, have not won a major title since. However, with the competition in their own backyard, as well as a whole crop of experienced and rising stars, Didier Deschamps's men are viewed as serious favorites to lift the title this upcoming July.

Portugal

After a disappointing World Cup that saw them dumped out at the group stages, Portugal appeared to have turned a corner. Under the guidance of Fernando Santos, they have won six out of their last seven matches (including friendlies) and are currently on top of Group I with 12 points, two ahead of Denmark and Albania.

This game, whilst it will not count for their overall standings, will serve two purposes. Firstly, the hosts will now have a chance to get revenge on France, who defeated them during their last meeting back in October 2014. And secondly, it will give Santos the opportunity to decide who to field in his starting XI, especially with their tough match with Albania coming up next.

In addition, Albania do have a game in hand, meaning that the outcome of the match next week could have a huge impact on on who will be placed first, second, and third in their quintet. This will represent the first time the national squad is back together after their June qualifying and friendly matches, which finished as a 3-2 win over Armenia and then a 1-0 victory over Italy.

Save for a couple of injuries and suspensions, Santos will have most of his personnel available. And with an eye on their big game against Albania, he will be expected to field a strong line-up, with the likes of Nani and Cristiano Ronaldo being guaranteed a spot in the starting XI.

France

Given their long footballing history, it is no surprise that the visitors are certainly no strangers to Friday's hosts. In fact, Portugal and France have met over 20 times since the 1920's and it's France who by far enjoy the better winning record: 17 versus five. Moreover, the two-time EURO winners have not only won all of their past nine meetings across all competitions dating back to 1978, but also recently enjoyed a 2-1 win over Portugal in October 2014 courtesy of goals from Karim Benzema and Paul Pogba.

With players like the aforementioned Real Madrid ace Benzema, and Juventus star midfielder Pobga making up the squad, it is no surprise that Deschamps's side are viewed as heavy contenders to win the EURO title next year. Other key players include Atletico Madrid attacker Antoine Griezmann, experienced Juventus and Manchester City defenders Patrice Evra and Bacary Sagna, and Tottenham shot-stopper Hugo Lloris, who now has returned to action following an injury lay-off.

Finally, PSG midfielder Blaise Matuidi has been in excellent form for Les Parisiens and both Kurt Zouma and Geoffrey Kondogbia are hoping to have bigger roles at Chelsea and Inter respectively.

One player, though, who has been generating a lot of buzz is 19-year-old Anthony Martial, who recently earned himself a mega-money move from Monaco to Manchester United. With a price tag of £36 million - making him the most expensive teenage signing in football history - Martial will be surely feeling the pressure, but at the same time will hope that this big move will earn him his first international cap (and perhaps even goal) at senior level.

Despite the wealth of talent at their disposal, France have not fared well in their recent friendlies. In fact, out of their past four games, they have managed just one win - a 2-0 result over Denmark - and ended upon the losing end against Brazil, Belgium, and perhaps most surprisingly, Albania.

Will France maintain their strong run against Portugal dating back to 1926? Or will Portugal, playing at home, continue from where they left off in June and build up some confidence and positive momentum for their crunch clash with Albania?

Given some of the star names that could feature, this will be a friendly match that fans will obviously not want to miss. Hence, make sure to bookmark LiveSoccerTV.com's Portugal vs. France page for all viewing information pertaining to your specific location.
