Cyprus vs Wales preview - September 3, 2015 fixture

1958. A time before the Internet, smart phones, and Twitter. It was also the last time Wales featured in an international tournament: that year's World Cup, contested in Sweden. The Dragons, seemingly against all odds, fought their way to the quarter-finals where they were eventually defeated 1-0 by Brazil, courtesy of the legendary footballer we now all know as Pele.

They did also make it to the quarter-finals of the EURO 1976 qualifiers - back when the actual tournament only featured four teams - but were unable to find a way past the former Yugoslavia. And now, nearly six decades later, they now have a chance to be one of the teams taking place at the EURO 2016 tournament in France.

Currently ranked ninth in the world - the highest ever in their history - they will now head to Nicosia's GSP Stadium to take on Cyprus, a team that are more than happy to use brute force rather than finesse to stop an opponent - as Bale and Wales found during their 2-1 win back in October 2014.

Cyprus

Currently tied with Israel on nine points in Group B, but behind due to a 2-1 loss in the first leg, Cyprus presently are the second-highest scoring team in their sextet, with 12 goals. However, for all their goal-scoring prowess, they simply can't seem to find a way to fix their porous back-line, which has conceded 11 goals so far. Although Wales and Belgium currently occupy the two top spots, a play-off position is not totally impossible, especially with a second meeting against the Israelis taking place next month.

Pambos Christodoulou's squad will be coming into this game having beaten Andorra 3-1 thanks to a Nestoras Mitidis hat-trick. However, their overall record against Wales is not good. Out of their five competitive (not including any friendlies) matches played, including last October's meeting, the hosts have only won one, a  3-1 result during the EURO 2008 qualifiers on October 13, 2007. Given this, Cyprus, who are ranked 82nd in the world and have yet to qualify for any major tournament, will be highly viewed as the underdogs in Thursday evening's clash.

Wales

The Dragons, presently at the head of the pack with 14 points, are the only team in Group B yet to lose a match. Interestingly, Wales are not the highest scoring team in their group - that honor belongs to Belgium - and so far have netted eight and conceded twice. Not surprisingly, Real Madrid superstar Bale has grabbed five of his team's total, and following an excellent performance for his club this past weekend, the 26-year-old will certainly be hoping to add more to his account on Thursday.

Chris Coleman's men are obviously looking to depart with Nicosia with all three points in hand, especially given that Belgium are just three points behind them and will be pushing for their own win over Bosnia. Despite many stating that the team is not just about the world's most expensive footballer, Cyprus will certainly target him yet again as they seek to pull off a major upset in front of their home crowd. Next up for Wales will be a meeting with Israel, but for now, their focus will be on making it two wins out of two against Cyprus.

Will Wales, now ranked in the top ten sides in the world continue their impressive unbeaten run towards a EURO 2016 spot? Or will Cyprus, still in the running for a play-off berth upset the Dragons' plans?

With the major leagues across Europe on hiatus, all eyes will be on the EURO 2016 qualifiers. And we here at LiveSoccerTV.com have you covered! Make sure to check out our special Cyprus vs. Wales page for specific viewing times and options for wherever you presently call home.
