The documents that were needed for Real Madrid to confirm David De Gea as their new star goalkeeper arrived two minutes past midnight. Moments later Real Madrid announced they would not appeal the decision of La Liga to cancel the transfer process. It is now official that De Gea will not leave Manchester United.
What was supposed to be a transfer contract worth £29m could now go down to zero next season when De Gea's contract with Manchester United expires. In this contract, David de Gea would become the new goalkeeper for Madrid and Keylor Navas would move to Manchester in order to take his spot.
Madrid's Side of the Story
Real Madrid claims that Manchester United waited until Monday to establish negotiations regarding the future of their 24-year old goalkeeper. They sent their paperwork at around noon (13:39) but it took a while for Manchester to send some corrections back (21:43).
The Red Devils then entered De Gea's details into Fifa's Transfer Matching System (TMS) at exactly midnight but they forgot to fill it in with Keylor Navas' information as well. By the time that Real Madrid received all the documents, it was two minutes past the deadline and the TMS had already closed.
Manchester's Side of the Story
The Red Devils
Manchester claimed they did everything on time but it was not their fault that the deal was not finalized. Most of what appears on Real Madrid's statement is not true according to the Red Devils.
Appeal Process
Real Madrid was given the option to appeal the fact that the documents were submitted in late. FIFA's TMS invited Madrid to move on with the appeal process. The problem was mainly with the Liga de Fútbol Profesional since the transfer window in England remained open at the time.
Los Blancos decided not to submit an appeal due to the fact they knew that La Liga would not make any exceptions to their timeframes. Now De Gea stays in Manchester and Navas will continue being number one in Madrid.
