The Frenchman has come under intense criticism after failing to show any ambition in the transfer window, but is he to blame for the club's shortcomings in the transfer window?

The current transfer window like most recent ones, has seen Arsenal fans ranting about the lack of transfer activity at the club. As we now reach the final day, Arsenal are reportedly not close to signing any big name with a host of fans labelling Wenger to be responsible for it.

The Gunners were quick in identifying Petr Cech as their new number one and wasted no time in securing his services. Since then Arsene Wenger's side has failed to add any other notable name to their ranks with celebrity fan Piers Morgan highlighting this as being absurd.

Arsene Wenger however is not one to come under pressure and has time and time again insisted that he will not be willing to make transfers just for the sake of spending money. An esteemed professional as he is, the Frenchman has indicated that he is willing to dig deep in his vaults but only if he finds the right player.

Do Arsenal need a marquee signing?

Arsenal have long been in search of a combative midfielder who could play the Patrick Viera role in the as a world class striker capable of scoring 30 plus goals in a season who could win them the title.

The Gunners had been linked with the likes of Arturo Vidal and Benzema with the former completing his move to German giants Bayern Munich and the latter expressing his loyalty to Real Madrid. Arsene Wenger reportedly vetoed a move for Morgan Schneiderlin and Francis Coquelin's early form suggests that it was probably the right decision.

The 24 year old has made the defensive midfield role his own and has arguably been Arsenal's stand out player so far.

On the other hand Arsenal's shortcomings upfront can be exemplified by the fact that they have made a total of 83 shots in four matches and as of now only one Arsenal player has a goal under his name this season.

Giroud and Walcott have both shown their weaknesses upfront and if Arsenal are to realistically challenge for the title this is one area they definitely must strengthen.

Are the right players available?

Having established that Coquelin has been Arsenal's stand out player so far, it is important to realise that any injury to him could prove to be calamitous for the side. Captain Arteta would be keen to use this opportunity to make a claim for himself in the starting line-up but the former Everton man does not have the legs anymore and cannot perform the job as well as his French teammate. Polish midfielder Grzegorz Krychowiak had been identified as an able back up but as things stand Arsenal are unlikely to sign him.

Arsenal's pursuit of Benzema has been reported by a majority of outlets and it is quite obvious that Arsene Wenger was keen on gaining his compatriot's services. The Real Madrid man on the other hand announced his loyalty to his present club and rubbished reports linking him with a move away.

Arsene Wenger has lamented over the lack of top strikers which are physically tough and mentally able to deal with the pressure of adjusting in the Premier League. Apart from Benzema, the likes of Edinson Cavani and Robert Lewandowski do fit the bill but both are important first team members at their respective clubs and are unlikely to be available for any sum.

Arsenal's title competitors have so far spent quite a fortune and the Gunners are far lagging behind in this respect.

However being inactive in the transfer window by no means has any bearing on how a team will perform in the coming campaign. Despite failing to add a marquee player to their roster, the Gunners do boast a talented squad. However the question remains if the current Arsenal is good enough to challenge for the title.
