The 10 other teams qualified through play-offs. The highlights of this latest exciting stage saw German contenders Bayer Leverkusen overturn a 1-0 deficit to beat SS Lazio 3-1 on aggregate. Jorge Jesus’ Sporting Lisbon suffered a heart-breaking narrow defeat on Russian soil. They lost 4-3 on aggregate, unable to protect their 2-1 advantage from the first leg.

The biggest winners were Manchester United who demolished Belgian side Club Brugge. The home game saw Memphis Depay steal the spotlight with a brace. The away fixture on Wednesday provided Wayne Rooney with an opportunity to end his 10-game goal drought and automatically become the Red Devils’ topscorer in all competitions this season with three goals. This hat-trick was his first in Europe since 2004. This completed a 7-1 triumph for Man United over the two legs; what a return to the group stages of the UEFA Champions League for the English giants, formerly managed by David Moyes!

The other big winners in the UCL Playoffs were Dinamo Zagreb (6-2 on agg. Vs Skenderbeu). Celtic were shocked by Malmo FF while Valencia did enough to hang on to their first leg advantage away to Monaco.
