The center back was sought out for a long time by the Blues, and he decided to facilitate his departure from the Toffees by submitting his request to leave the club.

If Chelsea was not able to convince Everton to sell them one of their gems, then "the gem" itself has to take a stand. Earlier today, defender John Stones submitted a transfer request in order to force a move to Stamford Bridge, given Everton's denial to sit down and discuss the player's future with Chelsea.

Chelsea submitted three offers to sign Stones from Everton, getting the same response everytime. The England International arrived back in 2013 to play for the Toffees, with coach Roberto Martinez being adamant about the player's future.

"I know it is your job to keep asking the same question and unfortunately it is my job in this case to always give you the same answer. In a saga of I don't know how many weeks now, we are very clear. I speak to John every day. As a footballer, unless two clubs reach an agreement, you can't do anything," Martinez stated.

Nevertheless, Stones' move today may shift things for good, so the English player can join the Blues this summer.

José Mourinho refused to speak about the future of the 4-time English international, although he hinted the club would make one more move to sign him.

"People used to call it the transfer window. I call it the opportunity window. While the window is open, there is always an opportunity. Let's see what happens," Mourinho added.
