The Croatian midfielder will wear Number 16 on his shirt, the same number flop Lucas Silva wore last season. Kovacic joins Los Blancos on a six-year deal.

Real Madrid has confirmed the signing of Croatian midfielder Mateo Kovacic from Inter Milan. The player will add depth to Los Blancos' holding midfielder position, following a complicated year which saw Luka Modric away due to injuries for a long time, while not giving Toni Kroos the right amount of rest in-between games.

The 21-year old player was welcomed by president Florentino Perez, who believes Kovacic will be quite useful for Los Blancos on the long run.

"Kovacic joins us after playing in a tough league, and even if he is still young, his experience and talent will reinforce our squad just fine. He will know from Modric first-hand that there's no throwing in the towel in this team. Our fans will be amazed by his skills and will be looking after his contribution," Perez stated.

Kovacic revealed his transfer was decided in just a matter of days. In fact, he chose to join Real Madrid thanks to his compatriot Luka Modric, who he believes had a lot to do with Los Merengues' decision to sign him.

"Everything happened really quick, it was a matter of three or four days. You can't say no to a club like this one, and when they placed their bid, there wasn't too much to think about. Everyone's happy with this deal," the Croatian stated.

"I'm sure someone asked for Luka's opinion, and I'm glad they did. He's a great player and I'm really happy to share the locker room with him," he added.

Kovacic revealed he is fully fit to play, and it will be up to Rafa Benitez to include him in the squad that will debut in the 2015-2016 season this Sunday.
