Santos and Club América will write another chapter in their historic rivalry on Friday night, when both sides clash at Territorio Santos Modelo Stadium. A good game should be expected between the two, since these teams are the most recent champions in the Mexican top flight, with América winning the Apertura 2014 tournament, and Santos emerging victorious in the recently concluded Clausura 2015.
Santos has not been able to deploy the skillful game recently, starting the tournament with three losses. Last Tuesday, Los Guerreros managed to win their first match of the season, defeating Querétaro with a 2-1 scoreline. That game was a re-edition of the Clausura 2015 final, which ended 5-3 on aggregate.
Things weren't that easy for América either. After parting ways with Gustavo Matosas, Ignacio Ambriz's stint as Las Águilas coach kicked off with two losses, raising doubts about his future with the club. After two wins in a row against Pachuca and Dorados, the yellow-and-blue side seems to be ready to face Los Laguneros.
One element of controversy will be the arrival of two former Santos Laguna legends, when Oribe Peralta and Darwin Quintero take the field. Peralta, nicknamed sarcastically "Hermoso", was one of the most respected players in the team's history, while Quintero made a name for himself as one of the franchise's top scorers. Peralta is expected to start, but Quintero may have to watch the first half of the game from the bench.
Taking under consideration regular season games only, Santos has won three of the last six matches between the two, with one draw. Despite this fact, the last meeting at Santos' grounds ended up with a 4-1 blowout for América. Mexican international Miguel Layún, currently playing for EPL's Watford, had one of his best nights as a pro scoring all goals for his team.
