As Jose Mourinho's side prepare to defend their Premier League title, what records could Chelsea potentially set this season?

Tomorrow, Chelsea will take on Swansea City in round one of the 2015/2016 Premier League. Fans around the world have been eagerly waiting for this moment for the past few months as they will tune in to see how Jose Mourinho's men will begin their title defense at Stamford Bridge.

Last season saw the Blues finally break the stranglehold the two Manchester clubs had tried to establish on the Premier League title. Following Chelsea's win in 2010, Manchester United and Manchester City had split the past four titles down the middle, with the Red Devils winning it in 2011 and 2013 and the Citizens in 2012 and 2014.

Ahead of this season, there are those who, of course, wonder if some records could be broken by the current Premier League champions. We take a quick look at five that in theory, Jose Mourinho's men could set once the season concludes on May 15, 2016. Some of these would involve Chelsea breaking their own established records...

1. Most total wins in a season

Chelsea currently hold the record of this, with 29 victories out of 38 games played which was established twice in the 2004/2005 and 2005/2006 seasons. In both those campaigns, the Blues also won back-to-back league titles. This past season saw them win 26, draw nine and lose just three. So, indeed, it is feasible they could make it a record-setting 30 wins by next May and will like to make it one down, 29 to go by beating Swansea City on Saturday.

Only two teams have completed an entire Premier League campaign sans defeat. The first was Preston North End in 1888/1889, in which only 22 games were played prior to the establishment of the modern-day Premier League in February 1992. The second in the modern era was Arsenal during their impressive 2003/2004 campaign, in which the Gunners completed 38 games with 26 wins and 12 draws.

2. Most home victories in a season

Again, it's Chelsea who also hold this record, with 18 home wins achieved during their title-winning campaign back in 2005/2006. This feat was also matched by Manchester United in the 2010/2011 term and, not to be outdone by their city rivals, Manchester City also joined this elite club a season later in the 2011/2012 edition of the Premier League. Not surprisingly, both Manchester clubs won the league during those seasons that saw them win 18 out of 19 home games.

No one has achieved a perfect home win record with a maximum of 57 points since the establishment of the Premier League in 1992.

3. Most away victories in a season

It was during that league-winning 2004/2005 term that Chelsea set yet another record. This time, it was for the most wins on the road, with the Blues earning all three points in 15 out of 19 away games. Last season, Mourinho's side posted the following record on the road: 11 wins, five draws, and three losses.

Can they top that and make it 16? We will see...

4. Most goals scored in a season

To be honest, it will be very tough for the Blues to match their haul of 103 goals accumulated during the 2009/2010 season. No other team has managed to match this total. Interestingly, they still only finished just one point ahead of Manchester United, who had to settle for a runners-up spot with 85 points. During that time, Didier Drogba netted 29 in the league and in total, the team scored another record-setting 68 goals at home. Last season, Chelsea scored 73, with Diego Costa scoring 20 of those.

Interestingly, though, in both the 2009/2010 and 2014/2015 seasons, the Blues conceded the exact same number of goals: 32.

5. Most points earned in one season

The highest amount of points earned by a Premier League side in one season is 95. And the team? Yes, Chelsea, during their impressive 2004/2005 season. They earned 87 last season, just eight behind this total, and no Premier League side has ever hit triple digits. However, across Europe teams like Barcelona in the La Liga, who earned 100 in 2012/2013 and Juventus in Serie A, who racked up 102 in 2013/2014 have achieved this.
