They broke Colombia’s hearts in injury time to win 1-0, left Brazil toothless with a 2-0 score line, and toyed with Chile 6-1. They are the Uruguayans, hosts of the 2015 South American Youth Football Championship where they topped Group B before finishing third in the Final Phase.
Uruguay have one thing in mind: to go one better than they did in Turkey 2013 when they lost to FIFA U-20 World Cup titleholders France. Their 13th participation in the tournament could be their lucky moment to finally hold the trophy after placing fourth twice, third once and second on two occasions.
They will come up against Serbia in their opening game. The Serbs are 2015 UEFA European U-19 Championship semi-finalists. They played out a goalless game but narrowly fell 4-3 to eventual runners-up Portugal. They will be a tough nut to crack in Group D like Mexico.
El Tricolor made a strong statement at the 2015 CONCACAF U-20 Championship from Day 1, humiliating Cuba 9-1 in Group B. From there, the Mexicans didn’t stop bagging goals. They picked up four wins and a draw in five matches with an 18-3 goalscoring record. Mexico are tipped to go far in New Zealand this summer.
In Group D, it would be wrong for anyone to underestimate the Malians. This is a team which managed to come on top of African heavyweights Ghana in the group stages of the African U-20 Championship back in March. Their semi-final and third-place final defeats to Senegal and the Black Satellites have certainly reminded Mali to keep themselves focused. In New Zealand, every game will be like a final. The Eagles have not spread their wings at the FIFA U-20 World Cup since 1999 when they finished third.
