Remember the year 1981 when Qatar went all the way to the final of the FIFA World Youth Championship (now restricted and renamed the FIFA U-20 World Cup)? On their road to Sydney, they stunned Brazil 3-2 and England 2-1. Although they collapsed 4-0 to West Germany in the final, they still received international recognition for their remarkable campaign.
Fourteen years later, they hosted the tournament but failed to replicate anything like the standard they had set for themselves in 1981. We are in 2015 and the FIFA U-20 World Cup will be staged for the third time in Oceania. Could this factor bring some luck to Qatar?
Colombia will be hoping to answer this question with a big “NO” at the Walkato Stadium on May 31st. This year’s edition of the tournament marks the South Americans’ third consecutive participation. It is also their ninth in total. Their 3-0 triumph over Brazil in the Final Phase of the 2015 South American Youth Football Championship in February was a loud statement of how solid the Colombians are.
Their calibre can be compared to Portugal’s who are also making their third appearance on the trot and have won the FIFA U-20 World Cup twice (1989, 1991).
Group C’s weakest team is Senegal who opened and closed the 2015 African U-20 Championship with defeats to winners Nigeria.
