The German midfielder ends his contract with Borussia Dortmund next year and has refused to sign an extension with the yellow-and-black.

Manchester United's coach Louis Van Gaal intends to make his team unstoppable, even if he has to spend enormous amounts of money to do so. The Dutch manager has eyed the possible replacement for English International Michael Carrick in United's midfield, with the Red Devils presenting a bid for German Ilkay Gundogan, who was also targetted before this season started.

According to sources, Gundogan would be joining Manchester United this summer, since the German is still under contract extension talks with Borussia Dortmund. Following the team's disappointing season, which saw them struggling to keep their spot in the Bundesliga, a series of Dortmund's players would be open to leave the club, including Mats Hummels and Ciro Immobile. Furthermore, Jürgen Klopp's departure from the team would leave no reason for them to stay.

Gundogan has played 89 games for Borussia Dortmund and nine for the German National Team

Even though Michael Carrick signed a one-year extension with the Red Devils, Van Gaal believes it's time to find a suitable replacement for his services, and Gundogan would fill the role just fine. The 24-year old German midfielder was set to play for his country during the most recent World Cup in Brazil, but an ankle injury prevented him of doing so.  His resume includes one Bundesliga, a German Cup and a German Super Cup. Gundogan was also key to Borussia Dortmund's 2012-2013 Champions League season, which saw Klopp's side reach the finals against Bayern Munich. In fact, Gundogan scored his team's only goal through a penalty kick.

This is not the first time Gundogan has been rumored to be joining Manchester United. Back in February, United's execs travelled to Dortmund in order to discuss a "package" that would include Hummels and Gundogan, with the Red Devils paying 70 million euros for the players' services. With Klopp's announcement about his future, it would be no surprise if both players ended up performing together at Old Trafford.

Is the German duo a good option for the Red Devils to win the Premier League next season?
