The Argenitinian manager took control of the team in 2011. There was speculation he would accept a job offer with Manchester City.

Rumor had it that Diego Simeone would stay in Madrid for a long period of time. That rumor is now a fact as the Argentinian manager has signed a contract extension with Atletico Madrid until 2020. 

Simeone arrived to Los Colchoneros in 2011 to take the spot that Gregorio Manzano had left. The years after he took control, in 2014, he led Atletico to win La Liga. It was the first time since 1996 that Atletico was crowned as the best team in the competition. Only Real Madrid or Barcelona had won it since then.

Atletico Madrid made it official via Twitter this Tuesday 

Fortunately I’ve been able to make this decision as I see a club that is moving forward, I see eagerness to grow and people willing to collaborate,” Simeone said in an official statement released by the club.

The team was extremely close to clinching the title, but a late goal from Sergio Ramos sent the game to overtime. Los Merengues would win it 4-1 in Lisbon, Portugal.

“We all love Atletico Madrid, and we all want to grow together. We all have a responsibility, hard work, nerves, and fear,” Simeone said.

In life you have to make choices, today I choose Atletico. Time to keep working, thank you all. 

A new stadium is on the way to replace the Vicente Calderon, which has been standing since 1966. It was the first stadium in Spain to obtain a 5-star UEFA Elite Stadium Certification. It also hosted a World Cup in 1982. Simeone felt the new venue shows how committed the club is to move forward.

Atletico Madrid is currently in fourth place in La Liga behind Barcelona, Real Madrid and Valencia. They will have a rematch of the past Champions League final against Real Madrid in the UCL quarter-finals.
