Real Madrid sealed their spot in the UEFA Champions League Quarterfinal stage, but they did it without the flare of old, raising doubts about their possibilities of winning back-to-back trophies in Europe's most important tournament, and most importantly, losing their first game of the season playing in the European competition.
Schalke started the game with a bang, and went ahead after Christian Fuchs left-footed strike that Iker Casillas was not able to reject. Minutes later, Cristiano Ronaldo scored his first goal of the game after a corner kick by Kroos. Real Madrid's shaky defending handed the Miners some chances to reclaim the lead, specially with Klaas Jan Huntelaar's strike to the bar. Finally, the Dutch striker and former Real Madrid player scored his team's second goal after Casillas failed to clear the ball from the box. With the game nearing the end of its first half, Ronaldo hit the back of the net again after a cross by Coentrao, giving Los Blancos an undeserved draw.
After the break, Karim Benzema gave Carlo Ancelotti's team the lead after a fine effort by Coentrao. Benzema, apparently offside, dribbled past two of Schalke's defenders and netted the ball with a right-footed srike. Yet again, Schalke fought back with a goal by Champions League debutant Leroy Sane, and had fans in the edge of their seats after Huntelaar's second goal of the evening. Schalke came close to creating a miracle, but Casillas and Pepe saved Los Blancos during the final minutes of the game.
Cristiano Ronaldo equalized Lionel Messi as the Champions League top scorer, and Ancelotti gave Luka Modric some minutes on the pitch after a four-month absence, but if they want to bounce back and win anything this season, something's got to happen in La Casa Blanca to prevent chaos.

El @realmadrid pitado por su afición en el Bernabéu tras una actuación lastimosa, triste, acobardada, sin merecer el pase a CF. #Champions
