FC Basel must find a way to score at least one goal if they are to get past Portuguese giants and two time winners of the competition, FC Porto, into the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday. Derlis Gonzalez gave Basel a quick lead in the eleventh minute in Switzerland. However, Porto put enough pressure on the Swiss giants for them to eventually succumb. The away side had more than sixty percent possession and attempted 15 shots. Tomas Vaclik had a busy afternoon. A 75th minute goal from Danilo from the penalty spot left the tie completely open, giving Porto the slight advantage through the away goals rule.
Jose Mourinho's former club has won five of their last six matches, their sole draw coming against Basel. On their current form, it is hard to bet against them. Also, they beat both Braga and Sporting Lisbon recently, thus creating a gap between themselves and their closest rivals. They are inching closer to Benfica slowly. As for Basel, they will be coming into this one on the back of three back to back wins although their form over the last six matches (won six, drawn two, lost one) is rather average. Basel have little to worry about domestically as their closest rivals, Young Boys are seven points behind them.
Ivan Ivanov is out injured for the away side while Marek Suchy is suspended. Oliver and Adrian are injured for the home side while Jackson Martinez is a doubt.
While Basel is certainly capable of scoring an away goal, Porto's superiority in the first leg means that the Swiss giants must come up with a new plan or see Porto take them to the cleaners at home.
