The first part of the UEFA Champions League’s Round of 16 fixtures somehow produced disappointing results. Only one team won and that was Real Madrid with Cristiano Ronaldo finding back his scoring boots in open play. PSG and Chelsea played out an entertaining 1-1 draw, FC Basel and FC Porto stumbled to the same result.
The biggest surprise, however, happened in Ukraine as high-flying Bayern Munich failed to score. Their goalless draw away to Shakhtar Donetsk was also marked by Xabi Alonso’s sending off on what was his 100th Champions League appearance.
In total, the four games offered the public nothing more than six goals but the UEFA Europa League provided more thrills with Celtic and Internazionale engaging in a breath-taking 3-3 draw, Everton and Napoli putting four goals past Young Boys and Trabzonspor respectively, and Liverpool beating Besiktas thanks to a Mario Balotelli penalty.
Watch out for something more intense in midweek as the 16 winners of the 2014/15 UEFA Europa League’s Round of 32 ties will be revealed. In the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday, the Etihad Stadium will be set to flames with Manchester City (5-0 winners at weekend) hosting a wounded Barcelona.
Still on Tuesday, Juventus vs Borussia Dortmund will let neutral fans be spoilt for choice on what to watch live. On Wednesday, February 25th, Arsene Wenger will lead Arsenal at home to surprise package AS Monaco. Diego Simeone, meanwhile, will lead La Liga titleholders Atletico Madrid against Bayer Leverkusen in Germany.
