A derby might be the perfect distraction for Bayern after a night to forget against Shakhtar Donetsk in Ukraine. Bayern were overwhelming favorites against the Ukrainian giants but failed to produce a spark. Pep Guardiola chose to play without a pure striker (Robert Lewandowski watched most of the match from the bench) and opted to start with Thomas Müller up front. If this plan was meant to confuse the opposition, it did not. Bayern's slow and predictable play allowed Shakhtar to defend well.

However, the club from Ukraine did not park the bus although they did not produce much of note up front. Neither goalkeeper saw much action as Bayern's movement up front was easily restricted by Mircea Lucescu's men. Shortly after the hour mark, Xabi Alonso saw a second yellow card. His lack of pace made him vulnerable on the day. Surprisingly, Shakhtar did not change their approach even when they had an extra man. The 0-0 result, especially due to the lack of an away goal, makes Bayern highly susceptible to an early exit come March, although, much like they did against Basel in the 2011-12 season (1-0 loss in Basel; 7-0 victory at home), they might pick themselves up and start playing precise passes again.

Their next opponent, Paderborn, started the season extremely well. However with just five wins to their name, they now sit in lowly thirteenth spot, only two points above the bottom two automatic relegation spots. Marvin Duksch and Thomas Bertels are out for the home side. Gianluca Gaudino is out for Bayern. Javier Martinez, captain Philipp Lahm (perhaps the most missed absentee) and Thiago Alcantara are on the road to recovery although this match might come too early for all three of them. Bayern beat Paderborn easily at the Allianz Arena, 4-0. The goals came courtesy of Mario Götze (two), Lewandowski and Müller on that day.
