The Spanish midfielder hasn't played for the Gunners since November, making his future uncertain since his contract ends this season.

Mikel Arteta's stint with Arsenal may come to an end abruptly, since the Spanish midfielder came down with an injury to his calf. Arsenal's captain has not been able to play for the Gunners since November, and since his contract with the team ends this season, his future will have to be sorted out with him on the sidelines.

Coach Arsene Wenger revealed the reasons why Arteta will be out of commission.

Mikel has had surgery which went well. I have just seen him, he is back with us at the training ground. He had limited mobility in his ankle and some persistent inflammation that had an impact on his calf, that meant we had to make the decision to have surgery and it's a proper solution which gives him the best chance to recover," Le Prof stated.

To make matters worse, the French manager revealed Mathieu Debuchy will not be available for the same amount of time as Arteta, since he injured his shoulder during Arsenal's last game against Stoke.

"It's very unfortunate for Mathieu, it's unbelievable because he's had two surgeries in the same season. He just came back, he played seven games and he's out again. I count three months out for Mathieu because contact will be a problem for the shoulder," Wenger added.

Arsenal will be looking to add some talent to their injury-depleted roster, with rumors indicating Wenger could be interested in signing Ilkay Gündogan and Mats Hummels off from Dortmund. If Hummels' transfer is not possible, then Le Prof's sights would be redirected to pen a deal with Mexican defender Hector Moreno.
