Former World Cup Leading Goal Scorer Ronaldo could be more than just an owner with his new club in Florida.

When soccer is in your DNA it is almost impossible to run away from it. That seems to be the case with Brazilian soccer star Ronaldo Luis Nazário de Lima. After retiring with Brazil’s Corinthians in 2011, Ronaldo assumes he still has something left in the tank. At 38 he believes the injuries that made him quit have gone away.

“It isn’t easy to get fit. I will try. I will train a lot,” said Ronaldo in a news conference this past Wednesday.

“El Gordito” also announced that he had become a part owner of the Fort Lauderdale Strikers, a team from the North American Soccer League, which lost the final to San Antonio last season.

The three-time “World Soccer Player of the Year” believes that his intentions to get back on the pitch will not only benefit himself.

“It’s another challenge, I am sure it will help the league, help the team,” Ronaldo affirmed.

According to stats provided by ESPNFC.com, the Strikers averaged 3,092 fans at home games per season, the league’s average was 5,989. That is about one third of the Major League Soccer attendance average of 18,704. Ronaldo has learned a thing or two about promoting a product during his time away from the pitch.

Since 2011 he became part-owner of 9ine Sports and Entertainment. The brand represents athletes like Neymar and Anderson Silva. NASL Commissioner Bill Peterson has the same positive mindset about the development of the league.

“We have 11 teams. Our goal is to have 20 teams by 2018”, said Peterson who wants to follow the trail of success of the MLS.

The Strikers will open their season on April 4th against the New York Cosmos.
