After a difficult time last season and a wobbly start to this season, it appeared that Manchester United had finally put all that behind them.
The Red Devils had strung together a good run of form to climb the table into third, and were looking all set to really be getting up and running.
Until, at least, earlier today when they were defeated by Southampton at home for the first time since 1998. However, if one were to look at their results over the past few league fixtures, while not unbeaten, the last win they earned was when they defeated Newcastle United 3-1 on December 26th.
Since then, Louis Van Gaal's men have been held to two draws, including a dour scoreless stalemate with Tottenham prior to the loss today.
As such, the Saints now move up into third, while the Red Devils slip into fourth. And fans were not amused with the Dutch tactician following the shock loss at Old Trafford.
Some disconcerting facts from their game this weekend included:
- Manchester United were the only side in the Premier League NOT to register a shot on target this weekend
- After 21 games, Louis Van Gaal has the same number of points that David Moyes--who was slammed all throughout last season earned--with 37
- This was the first game that the Red Devils had been unable to even have one attempt on target at home in nearly six years. The last time this happened was in April 2009 in a 0-0 draw with Arsenal.
Fans simply were shocked, some were even enraged. Some couldn't even believe his team selection, with Radamel Falcao notably being left out despite being fit:
- Falcao rested - Di Maria as ST, Rooney in midfield - Fellaini as Plan B when 1-0 down - 3-5-2 - Herrera benched Shocking from LVG. #ego
