The Spaniard is reportedly close to making a return to his boyhood club, with Alessio Cerci headed the other way, but why exactly are Atletico after the former Liverpool star?

Defending Spanish Primera Division champions Atletico Madrid are inches away from bringing Spanish striker Fernando Torres back to the Vicente Calderon stadium, seven years after he left his boyhood club for Liverpool back in 2007.

Currently on loan with AC Milan, the Chelsea forward has not impressed for the Rossoneri since putting pen to paper on a two-year loan deal, despite all the hype surrounding the 30-year-old striker’s San Siro arrival.

Only finding the back of the net once for Filippo Inzaghi’s crew, the Italian giants appear eager to be rid of Torres, with club president Adriano Galliani agreeing to terminate the Spaniard’s contract with AC Milan, as Los Rojiblancos ready to welcome “El Nino” back among their ranks.

Rumors broke on Christmas Eve of La Furia Roja ace’s possible return to Atletico Madrid. According to Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, AC Milan is ready to swap Torres for Atletico Madrid’s Alessio Cerci, who was signed from Torino over the summer.

Diego Simeone’s side, who are sitting in third place in the Liga BBVA standings, and who will face Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League round of 16, are keen on completing the Torres deal as soon as possible as the Chelsea-owned star would be available to feature for Atletico Madrid on the European stage, as reported by Mundo Deportivo (per 101 Great Goals).

If “El Nino” returns to Madrid, he would have to fight Croatian striker Mario Mandzukic for a spot in the Madrid side’s starting eleven.
