Despite his combative reputation, the Portuguese defender's disciplinary record in La Liga this season may surprise fans.

Certainly no one can dispute that Real Madrid defender Pepe is one of the more divisive figures in the game.

Fans of the capital club like him for his all-action displays on the pitch, whereas supporters of opposing clubs, such as arch-rivals Barcelona can not stand the Portuguese international.

This past summer saw him sent off for the 12th time in his professional career after headbutting German star Thomas Muller. Yet, since then, the Brazilian-born center-back has been on his best behavior.

How much so? Well, this might even surprise the most devoted Real Madrid fan: he has yet to pick up a single booking so far this season.

That's right. Not a single red, not even a yellow. On top of that, he has only committed five fouls so far for Carlo Ancelotti's side, despite featuring regularly.

As per Spanish publication MARCA, his centre-back pairing Sergio Ramos has been culpable of five times as many fouls and already has racked up five yellows in the same period.

Rival defenders such as Javier Mascherano and Gerard Pique have not committed anywhere as many as Ramos, with eight and seven respectively, but both the Argentinian and Spanish internationals have been cautioned, and in Mascherano's case, been sent off.

So, has Pepe really turned a new leaf? Well, it would be interesting to see if he does "good boy" behavior for the remainder of the season, or if he will return to his old ways and start mixing it up on the pitch.
