Manchester City's comeback in the UEFA Champions League revealed a weakness rather than a strength in midweek. Bayern lost a man (Mehdi Benatia) and City were awarded a penalty. Sergio Aguero gave the home side the lead but, by half time, Bayern emerged as the dominant side and led 1-2. Two uncharacteristic errors by a tired Bayern side allowed City to take home the three points in a 3-2 win. Yet, the fact that they struggled against a side down to ten and let a lead slip shows a problem. Roma will not be easy to put away on the final match day, considering that City struggled against ten men although those ten men belonged to Bayern.
This weekend, they take on a side which is second only to Chelsea in the Premier League this season, highflying Southampton. City sits behind Southampton in the Premier League table. With a win in this match, City can leapfrog the fairytale side of the season so far and climb into second. Considering City's rather poor recent performances, doing so will not be easy. This match ended in a 1-1 draw last season. Such a draw will surely please Southampton. Jay Rodriguez and James Ward-Prowse are out for Southampton. Steven Davis, after missing the match against Aston Villa, should be ready to return.
For Manchester City, Aleksandar Kolarov and Edin Dzeko are out. David Silva is recovering from his injury and should return soon although this match might come too early for him. More importantly for City, Sergio Aguero is ready to terrorize defenses. A Champions League hat trick is special but one that comes against one of the best teams in the history of the Champions League is even more special. He could be the difference maker for City against Southampton.
