The Mexican club will represent CONCACAF in the upcoming Club World Cup, but they will not make the playoffs for the first time in five years.

During his weekly press conference, Cruz Azul's coach Luis Fernando Tena took the blame for the club's performance this season, since the team depends on five results to make the Apertura 2014 playoffs. The gold medal winner with Mexico in the 2012 Olympics assured the team will try to do their part as they wait for "a miracle".

"The players don't have to take the blame. This is one of the best squads in Mexico, and it is pretty clear that we as coaches have failed. I've analyzed the situation and it's obvious that I have to take the blame for what happened this season," Tena stated.

With the Club World Cup just around the corner, Cruz Azul would need to keep playing to avoid losing rhythm towards the tournament, but if they can't make the Mexican playoffs they will find themselves in quite a predicament.

"We know it's really hard for us to make it into the playoffs. We have to work with the idea that the game against Universidad de Guadalajara will be our last, try to win it and see what happens. When we finish the game, then we will prepare for what's coming in December. It's not just up to us," the coach added.

Cruz Azul need to win their away match against the "Black Lions" and hope for five other teams to lose, a rather complicated scenario for one of Mexico's Big Four, alongside Chivas, America and Pumas.
