After some earlier wobbles, Nigeria seem to finally have gotten back on track. The reigning AFCON champions had lost two and drew one before finally stringing together back-to-back wins against Sudan and Congo that now see them four points behind their upcoming opponents South Africa in second place. Still, with Congo breathing down their necks as they are only in third based on goal difference, the Super Eagles will be really pushing to earn all three points especially in front of their home crowd.
Less than a month ago, the entire nation of South Africa was plunged into mourning following the tragic death of Senzo Meyiwa. The 27-year-old, who played in three of the Bafana Bafana's qualifying matches, including a scoreless draw against Congo, was murdered in a home invasion late last October and his passing certainly will have an impact on his teammates.
Prior to their impressive quarter-finals run at the last edition of the AFCON championship, the visitors' best finish was another quarter-finals berth in 2002. This was then followed by a couple of group stage exits and failures to qualify during a tumultuous period that saw a whole slew of coaches from various countries make an appearance on the tactician's bench.
Nonetheless, South Africa have already booked their berth for the upcoming tournament next year, so the onus will be on Nigeria to go for a win. Anything less coupled with a win for Congo against group strugglers Sudan will mean their hopes of defending their title will come to an end.
