After admitting that he missed out on CR7 years ago, could Wenger be on the cusp of signing the next big thing?

11 years ago, Arsene Wenger could have the chance to sign a rising Sporting Lisbon star, but balked at the Portuguese club's asking price for him.

£12 million was deemed to be too pricey for the French tactician, but it wasn't the case for then Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson, who moved quickly to sign Cristiano Ronaldo. And as fans of the now Real Madrid star are aware, the rest is history.

As a result, then, reports claim that Wenger is keen not to miss out on the next big thing. Despite being only 17 years old, Benfica's Goncalo Guedes is already making waves and apparently has other big sides like Real Madrid and PSG keen on his services.

The next Cristiano Ronaldo? Check out the youngster in action:

Naturally, realizing the interest in their starlet, the Portuguese giants are looking to lock him down into a five-year deal, but while inserting a £40 million buy-out clause with the intent to possibly sell him as early as next summer.

The question is, would Wenger, who generally has been conservative with his spending until recently, be willing to splash that kind of cash on a largely unproven youngster?
