Fans at Amsterdam Arena saw history develop in front of their eyes, as Lionel Messi equalized the all-time scoring record for the UEFA Champions League. With this win, Barcelona's chances to finish first in their group will depend on them winning against Paris Saint-Germain on November 25th.
Things for Barcelona did not start quite well, as Ajax enjoyed most chances in the first 35 minutes of the game. The Dutch champion tested Marc-Andre Ter Stegen's skills more than once, but it was the other goalkeeper, Jasper Cillessen, who made the game's first mistake. Cillessen failed to clear a lobbed ball inside his box, giving Marc Bartra the chance to pass the ball to Messi, who headed the ball into the back of the net for his 70th UCL goal.
After the break, Barcelona established their dominance, even having Luis Suarez missing out a great one-on-one chance created by Messi. Minutes later, Pedro Rodriguez dribbled past Ajax's defense to cross the ball inside the box. Messi slided to send the ball into Cillessen's net to tie Raul as the UCL's top scorers. The Argentinian had two more chances to break the deadlock, but he wasn't accurate enough. The game ended with Ajax eliminated of this Champions League edition, and with Messi one goal away of establishing a new record.

FACT: Messi's record equalling 71st UCL goal came in 50 fewer matches than Raul. Raul's came in match 140, Messi's in his 90th appearance.

It's weird how Messi's historic genius now just seems "routine".
