Liverpool's 33-year-old Ivorian defender kept Cristiano Ronaldo and Co. quiet throughout the 90 minutes, much to the surprise of many, stopping the Portuguese star from equaling Raul's record

When Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers named Kolo Toure in the Merseyside club's starting eleven for their Champions League clash with Real Madrid, many expected a goalscoring fiesta from the Liga BBVA giants.

A side boasting the likes of James Rodriguez, Karim Benzema, and Cristiano Ronaldo, who has been in sizzling form in front of goal all season, netting 17 in 9 La Liga fixtures, 4 in three European outings, one could be excused for believing that the Reds were in for a long night.

Known for being prone to mistakes, the howler in Liverpool's 1-1 draw at West Brom coming to mind, Kolo Toure, shocking to many, performed well to keep Los Blancos' attack in check.

Despite losing 1-0 thanks to a 27th minute Karim Benzema goal, Liverpool, who benched many of their high-profile players on Tuesday, could give themselves a huge pat on the shoulder after the Santiago Bernabeu tie, their defense in particular, as the former Arsenal full-back was praised all over Twitter for his impressive display against Les Merengues, mainly through Trolls and Memes.

Cristiano Ronaldo, who failed to score for Carlo Ancelotti's men for the first time in 13 games, could have equaled Raul's all-time Champions League goalscoring record, but was stopped on his tracks by Toure's heroics at the heart of Liverpool's back-line.

Even the Merseyside club's 41-year-old Irish manager was full of praise for the 33-year-old Les Elephants defender, saying after the game: "Kolo Toure was excellent. Tonight gives me great food for thought."
