Despite their 2013-14 La Liga-winning campaign, Los Rojiblancos players lost out to their city rivals in the LFP awards, something that left the club's president in amaze

Despite beating out La Liga giants Real Madrid and Barcelona to the 2013-14 Spanish Primera Division title, Atletico Madrid did not enjoy a successful night at the LFP awards ceremony on Monday.

The Rojiblancos, who clinched the Liga BBVA in the final game, a 1-1 draw with the Blaugrana at Camp Nou, walked away with only one award, a Best Coach accolade for Argentine boss Diego Simeone, as no Atletico Madrid player were bestowed for their heroic, which saw them make it all the way to the Champions League final.

Los Blancos, on the other, claimed many, as Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo came away from the ceremony holding three awards, Best Player, Best Attacker, and Best Goal, whilst Sergio Ramos and Luka Modric grabbed the Best Defender and Best Midfielder awards.

This was something that left Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerez shocked, though he went on to say that everyone must respect the decisions of the panel.

"I'm surprised Real Madrid received more prizes than Atletico, but there is a jury and we respect their decision," Cerezo told reporters after the ceremony ended.

Rayo Vallecano defender Emiliano Insua, on loan from the Vicente Calderon, also could not hide his astonishment in the Madrid side's snub at the award ceremony, stating:

"It is a bit unusual to see that not one Atletico player won an award at the ceremony."

"It’s strange, especially considering what the team achieved last season – the league title, a Champions League final… but they are the official awards and we have got to accept it."
