The Three Lions skipper is keen on taking a step closer to etching his name in the record book when San Marino come to Wembley

England captain Wayne Rooney admits he is keen on breaking the Three Lions goalscoring record as Roy Hodgson's men gear up to host San Marino at Wembley in a Euro 2016 qualifiers on Thursday, before.traveling to face Estonia on Sunday.

The Manchester United has registered an impressive tally of 41 goals in 91 appearances since making his senor debut with the national side back in 2003, and is only three shy of former Tottenham and Chelsea striker Jimmy Greaves's tally of 44.

The current record is held by Red Devils legend and 1966 World Cup winner Sir Bobby Charlton, who netted 49 times for England, meaning eight goals would be enough for the former Everton striker to equal the record.

"You’re in this game for your team-mates," stated Rooney. "There’s nothing better than getting a trophy. But it would be great to get the record.

"I’d never have thought that when I came into this England team that I would be best goalscorer.

"It would be massive for me and make my family proud. I want to do it.

"I’ve seen clips of Jim my Greaves and Bobby, of course. It is there. It’s there for me to overtake them all and I feel I’m capable of doing that.

"Now I’m three behind Jimmy and it would be a huge honour for me. It’s not something I’ve looked at for a long while but I’m confident in myself and believe I will do it.

"Hopefully I’ll be sat here having won it."
