Despite being named as captain of Manchester United recently, the Ligue 1 cash-rich side are confident of signing the English star.

He might have been just named as Manchester United's newest captain, but that hasn't stopped Ligue 1 side Monaco from making some pretty bold claims about Wayne Rooney.

The 28-year-old. who also serves as skipper for the Three Lions, also recently signed an improved contract that earns him an estimated £300,000 per week after he handed in a transfer request to depart.

Nonetheless, the cash-rich side, which followed up winning Ligue 2 in the 2012/2013 campaign by finishing second to PSG last season, haven't given up on signing the English star.

Despite showing their ambitions by splashing the cash on big signings, Monaco were unable to hang on to star duo Radamel Falcao and James Rodriguez. The Colombian pair opted to part in favor of Manchester United and Real Madrid this summer.

Disappointment: Monaco saw both Radamel Falcao and James Rodriguez depart after just one season

So, given their spending power, the club are desperate to bring in some marquee names, especially after it was revealed last month that some Monaco fans were angrily demanding refunds due to their failure to sign any stars during the summer transfer market.

The club's vice-president, then, has declared that they will not give up on the pursuit of Rooney, in particular as the player was recently slammed for his poor decision making on the pitch.

"One year ago, we were discussing one of the top players in the Premier League, a top English player," Vadim Vasilyev stated.

"[Unfortunately] this opportunity [to bring him in] ultimately did not happen, but I think one day that it will [actually] happen."

This is not the first time that Rooney has been linked with a move to France, with reports back in May associating him with a switch to PSG to link up with Zlatan Ibrahimovic prior to Louis Van Gaal's arrival.
