Despite spending a club record £42.4m fee on the 25-year-old, could Wenger let the German playmaker leave the Gunners after only one year with the north London side?

German playmaker Mesut Ozil, who has come under much criticism due to a run of below-par performances, is being linked with an Arsenal exit.

After moving to London only a year back on the summer transfer window deadline day, signing for a club record fee of £42.4m from La Liga giants Real Madrid, the player has been unable to recapture his form from his Santiago Bernabeu days.

Known as one of the most gifted midfielders during his time with Los Blancos, the 25-year-old began life at Arsenal extremely well, assisting a goal after only 11 minutes in a Gunners shirt, but has so far experienced a dip in form.

Blamed of fading away in the big games, Ozil has yet to fully live up to his hefty price tag. But according the reports, this hasn't put off admirers of the former Werder Bremen ace, with Bayern Munich boss Pep Guardiola rumored to be keen on signing Ozil.

Mesut Ozil, Arsenal, Aston Villa, English Premier League

According to the London Evening Standard, the Bundesliga champions, who lost fellow German midfielder Toni Kroos to Real Madrid, are eyeing a move for the die Mannschaft maestro when the January transfer window opens.

Arsene Wenger, who is preparing his side for the much-anticipated north London derby clash with Tottenham on Saturday, has constantly defended his record signing, thus making an Emirates Stadium exit highly unlikely.

But Mesut Ozil, who struck back at his critics after his impressive performance in Arsenal's 3-0 win over Aston Villa, has found difficulty securing his favored No.10 position in the squad, facing tough competition from the likes of Jack Wilshere, Aaron Ramsey, and Santi Cazorla.

Accompanied by the arrival of Chilean attacker Alexis Sanchez, Le Prof has been handed a selection headache, as the long-serving French manager looks to fit all his midfield talent into a starting XI, resulting in Mesut Ozil being pushed wide, a position that appears to be very uncomfortable for the player.
