Liverpool will play their first Champions League match since 2009 when they face Ludogorets at Anfield on Tuesday, the 16th of September.

The Reds finished second in the Premier League last season and their antics have earned them the right to once again compete in Europe’s premier competition. Their return to the celebrated tournament will be marked with a relatively easy home fixture against Bulgarian outfit Ludogorets however the Reds will have to rub shoulders with the best later in the competition with Brendan Rodgers’ men paired in the same group as Real Madrid.

The void left by Uruguayan international Luis Suarez who made a switch to Barcelona in the summer has been fairly evident with Liverpool having already lost twice in the Premier League. Their 3-1 defeat at the hands of Manchester City on match day 2 was followed by a strong performance against Tottenham, a match the Reds won by a 3-0 score line.

However Liverpool were not able to carry their good performance to the next match as they slumped to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Aston Villa. Gabriel Agbonlahor capitalized on a defensive error to give the villans an early lead which they were able to maintain till the end of the match.

Despite not being at their best, Brendan Rodgers’ has expressed his excitement upon Liverpool’s return to the biggest stage and has claimed that a competition as big as the Champions League needs a team like Liverpool.

"We're very excited to be in the Champions League. Five years is a long time to be out of it for a club like Liverpool," Rodgers said.

"Our overriding objective first of all is to qualify and come out of the group. We'll take it one game at a time and aim for three points.”

"It is one of the great clubs with a rich European heritage, and the competition needs Liverpool in it.”

"The key is to ensure we remain in it for the long term, and it is a challenge that excites us as well - for us there is no fear, we will embrace it."

Ludogorets on the other hand have had a bright start to the season and have picked 15 points from their opening eight games in the Bulgarian league. However Georgi Dermendzhiev’s side is short of options as far as goalkeepers are concerned with first choice Vladislav Stoyanov ineligible as he serves a one match ban and his deputy Ivan Cvorovic ruled out with a shoulder injury.
