The Dutch manager has had a difficult start of the season but he is still confident that the club can become Premier League champions.

Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal is confident that the ‘Red Devils’ can turn things around and contend for the title despite having struggled in the beginning of the season with only two points collected after three matches. Still, the former Netherlands national team coach believes that his team can finish at least in the top three positions.

Following a summer ‘exodus’ of players leaving Old Trafford, Van Gaal has completely renewed the squad with the goal of taking Manchester United to the old glory days after a dreadful campaign under David Moyes. The likes of Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, Javier Hernández and Danny Welbeck have left the club to make space for Falcao, Marcos Rojo, Angel Di Maria and Daley Blind, whether they will adapt to Van Gaal’s coaching philosophy in the short-term is still in question.

However, Van Gaal is convinced that he will make the changes required to build a successful team. Ahead of their match against QPR at Old Trafford on Sunday, the manager was asked if Manchester United could become champions this season and he said that there is still a long way to go and anything is possible.

“Yes, it is possible,” Van Gaal said. “This is because we have to play a lot matches and we are not so much behind.

“We have spoken about the target when we [Van Gaal and Woodward] had the meetings together. A club like Manchester United needs to put targets and I also put targets. I don’t think it is unreasonable target [to finish in the top three].

“Whether it is difficult is another question, but a club like United must always put a target. Within the top three is logical because United always want to be in the Champions League. But we have to produce results, starting on Sunday against QPR.

Van Gaal also said that the club managed to bring in quality players during the transfer period despite not playing the Champions League this season.

“What we have done in the transfer period is very good. In spite of the fact we don’t play in the Champions League, the players are coming to United and that is a big plus.”
