The Dutch tactician was blunt in his criticism of the striker as he seeks to help the club redeem themselves this season.

Following his appointment, new Manchester United coach Louis Van Gaal has been a man on a mission.

The Dutch tactician, who was at the helm of the Oranje during this summer's World Cup has been keen on completing a total overhaul of personnel within the Premier League giant's ranks due to their poor performance last season.

A whole crop of players were shown the door, including striker Danny Welbeck, who moved on to rivals Arsenal in a €20 million move on deadline day.

Despite having come up through the youth system, the 23-year-old was never going to be a part of Van Gaal's plans, and he has now bluntly revealed exactly why.

Welbeck has never scored more than 9 league goals in a season. His highest ever output is 12 in all competitions

"[Simply put], I have given all the players a chance to convince me of their qualities," he informed reporters.

"[Welbeck] played here for three seasons after Sunderland, but he doesn’t have the record of Van Persie or Rooney and that is the standard. [So] that is why we let him go, [not only] because of Falcao, but also [because we have] the youngsters who can fit in."
