Winless at home in over 10 years against Benfica in league play, V. Setúbal will be hopeful they can put an end to that trend. Watch live on TV as these two sides kick off matchday four in the Primeira Liga.

Since being dismissed from Sporting CP in 2012, Domingos Paciência has struggled to find a permanent home. Brief stints with Deportivo de la Coruña and Kayserispor did not end well, and the former Portuguese international is back in his home country, this time in charge of V. Setúbal.

The Sadinos have been far from impressive away from home, but in their only match in front of their own fans, they defeated Gil Vicente 2-0.

Friday’s opponent will certainly cause them more problems, but the Sadinos are confident in themselves. The fact that Setúbal has not defeated Benfica at home in a league match since the 1998/99 season will also be added motivation.

“Benfica is not the same squad as they were last season, but they have the same core players,” Domingos said in his press conference on Thursday.

“The squad from last season had an incredible dynamic, and with new players in the squad, every club has their own problems. Benfica is a tougher than usual opponent and with better conditions than most, but that will not change our belief in wanting to win and putting on a good performance in front of our fans. It is with that mentality that we will take the pitch.”

From their last 10 meetings at the Estádio do Bonfim in the domestic league, the hosts have only managed to score three goals against the Lisbon outfit. On the contrary, Benfica has scored 23. Things could get a little more difficult for Setúbal on Friday, seeing as Brazilian goalkeeper Julio Cesar looks likely to make his debut for the Portuguese champions.

Fans have questioned Artur’s presence in between the sticks for quite sometime, and with the acquisition of the veteran keeper, their questions may have been answered. Cesar will offer Benfica more stability and security at the back, in a match that Jorge Jesus believes is the most important for them to date.

“The most important match is against Setúbal because our main objective is to be champions again,” Jesus said on Thursday when asked about having one eye on the club’s mid-week Champions League match.

“That will always be our priority and that’s why we are only focused on Friday’s match, and then on Tuesday against Zenit, we will see who will play. From Friday until Tuesday there is more than enough time for players to recover.”

Unbeaten in their three domestic matches, Benfica’s perfect record was tarnished before the international break in a one goal draw against same city rivals Sporting CP. The Águias actually were the better team, but a vital mistake from Artur gifted their opposition a goal. Benfica fans will be hopeful that with Julio Cesar in the squad, those mental lapses will give the team more confidence.
